Mitari renews crane fleet at Heijmans
Heijmans faced a challenge: their crane park in Rosmalen, which is used to maintain road construction vehicles, was in need of renewal. They engaged Mitari to realise this complex project. Mitari took up the challenge and developed a plan to replace the crane fleet with new, modern overhead cranes. In this blog, you can read all about this complex project.
Heijmans' crane park
It all started with a request from Heijmans: the fleet of cranes they used at their Rosmalen site was in need of renewal. This crane park is used by Heijmans for repairs and maintenance work on vehicles, especially for road construction, including asphalt pavers and rollers. To ensure the safety and reliability of these overhead cranes, a thorough update and renewal was necessary.
Specifications
After consultation between the two parties, it became clear that five overhead cranes needed to be removed on site and replaced by five new overhead cranes. In addition, one overhead crane needed a complete overhaul. The overhead cranes were all double girder cranes; this means that the overhead crane consists of two beams with the hoisting unit/cat in between. The overhead cranes ranged in length from 16 to 17 metres with tonnages of 3.2 tonnes, 5 tonnes and three times 10 tonnes. The overhauled overhead crane had a tonnage of 16 Tons.
Preparation in the workshop
After Heijmans' wishes had been clearly mapped out, the project could start. Our experienced project coordinator and manager took the lead. They ensured an efficient and structured course of the project and acted as contact person for Heijmans, keeping communication lines short. All details were carefully checked and quotations were drawn up. Our planner ensured that the project could be carried out with minimal disruption to Heijmans' work process. Before the overhead cranes were transported to the site for installation, they were carefully prepared in our workshop by our skilled fitters over a two-week period. The five overhead cranes were fully assembled, after which they were extensively inspected by Heijmans and subjected to Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) checks. Thanks to this thorough preparation in the workshop, on-site installation went smoothly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to Heijmans' operations.
On-site installation
The overhead cranes were transported by specialised trucks to their new location in Rosmalen. Our experienced mechanics were on hand to install them. The exchange of the five overhead cranes was structured. One by one, the old overhead cranes were removed from the hall using a telescopic handler from Scheepens Verreikers, our experienced partner in large projects. Precision and patience were key, as the new overhead cranes had to enter through a narrow entrance and fit exactly in place. The old overhead crane, after being removed from the hall, was set aside. At the same time, the truck arrived with the new overhead crane, which was removed from the truck with the same precision. The old overhead crane was then loaded onto the truck and removed, ready for a new life or reuse of parts. The new overhead crane was taken to the right hall, where our mechanics reinstalled the overhead crane using an aerial platform and the telescopic handler from Scheepens Verreikers. After accurately fixing the overhead crane and making the final adjustments, the overhead crane was again ready for use. This process was repeated five times, resulting in five perfectly installed overhead cranes in just 1,5 week.
Thorough overhaul of existing crane
Besides the installation of the five new overhead cranes, one crane was completely overhauled, which took a total of about three weeks. During the overhaul, the overhead crane's engines as well as the hoisting unit and other parts were dismantled, transported to our site, replaced and refurbished in the workshop before being returned and reassembled in the overhead crane. At the site, the overhead crane was thoroughly refurbished, including cleaning, painting, lubrication, etc., and finally, the overhead crane was tested and made operational again.
Sustainable ambitions
Heijmans has sustainable ambitions, including with its electrical equipment, and is therefore working in its own workshop to renew and make it more sustainable. This requires the cranes. This approach extends the lifespan of the equipment and contributes to a more sustainable work process.
Cooperation and successful completion
A total of nine Mitari employees worked on this project. Thanks to close cooperation with Heijmans, the project went successfully. Heijmans' fleet of cranes can once again last for years.
